Men For others legacy scholarship
Since September 2011 when I announced the end of my tenure as President at Creighton Prep, I have received many emails, phone calls, notes, cards and letters expressing thanks for my service. It has been my privilege to serve as the 11th President of Creighton Preparatory School. When I entered the Jesuits over 25 years ago, I never would have imagined that I would have the opportunity to serve in this capacity.
Many people began to speak about my legacy related to the facilities, the gymnasium, the atrium, the back game field, the classroom auditorium, and technology center. While I am proud of the expanded and well-maintained facilities, I derive greater satisfaction from knowing that I have had a hand in shaping the lives of over 3,000 boys.
The basic premise of Creighton Prep is that we take a boy and mold him into a “Man for Others.” I am convinced that working in partnership with parents, faculty and staff, Board, alumni and friends that we make a transformational difference in the lives of young men. They become good husbands and fathers and provide the basis for the family structure. Through well-established families, we make societal change.
Nothing has been as meaningful to me as helping young men whose families are broken or do not have the financial means to attend Creighton Prep. In these cases, Creighton Prep changes the trajectory of a young man’s life. Because of the high quality, challenging academic program, he will stand on a higher platform from which to launch on his life’s journey. Because of the Catholic and Jesuit educational philosophy, he will aspire to do greater things for others and God.
So, speaking of legacy, it is my desire to create the 100 man endowed fund which will make Prep a possibility for young men who come from families who need help to make their dream a reality.
Fr. Thomas J. Merkel, S.J.
A Note from the Board Chair
Father Merkel said it well: Creighton Prep changes the trajectory of a young man’s life through challenging academics taught within a Catholic and Jesuit philosophy that values service at its core.
Now, to honor Fr. Merkel’s service in changing young lives over the past nine years, all of us on the Creighton Prep Governing Board look forward to help establish the “Men for Others Legacy” scholarship by securing a $1 million lead gift to be matched by “100 men” giving $10,000 each.
When fully funded, we know that the $2 million Men for Others Legacy scholarship will be a significant force for change in the lives of many deserving boys and their families. Families who need a financial bridge to the education, the discipline and the other-centeredness that mark a Prep graduate for life and make him a “Man for Others” changing the lives of all those he impacts beyond 74th & Western.
Please join us in this effort to make a difference in the lives of young men for generations to come. Click HERE to donate now.
